FD Calculator: what it does and when to use it

An FD calculator shows what a bank or post office fixed deposit will be worth at maturity and how much interest it earns, based on the amount, interest rate, tenure and compounding frequency.

Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly. Use the calculator to compare offers from different banks or to decide between a cumulative FD and one that pays interest out.

How to use it: set each input with the slider or type an exact figure. Results, the chart and the shareable link update instantly.

Method

How this calculation works

The exact formula and assumptions behind the numbers above.

Formula

A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t)

P = principal, r = annual rate ÷ 100, n = compounding periods per year, t = years.

Assumptions

  • More frequent compounding produces a slightly higher maturity value.
  • Interest is taxable at your slab rate; TDS may apply above the threshold.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the FD rate fixed for the whole tenure?

Yes for a standard fixed deposit. A floating-rate FD changes with the benchmark, so this calculator assumes a fixed rate.

What about senior citizen rates?

Banks usually offer an additional 0.25–0.50% to senior citizens. Enter the rate you are actually offered.

Is TDS deducted on FD interest?

Yes. Banks deduct TDS when your annual FD interest crosses the threshold set by the Income Tax Act. You can submit Form 15G or 15H if you are eligible to avoid it.

Can I break an FD early?

Usually yes, but banks charge a penalty, often 0.5–1% off the applicable rate. Tax-saving FDs have a 5-year lock-in and cannot be broken early.
